Picture Perfect Gulma

Rural India has many things to offer. It is not the first time that I am sharing my experience of rural India and rural West Bengal, It’s been since the beginning of this blog. This time the place is Gulma, an area based on tea cultivation.

I visited this place during late monsoon and yes, it was a cloudy day with little rain. The place is just 11 kilometres from Siliguri, and we started to see the greens within 20 minutes of starting the journey. Though it was a cloudy day, the Darjeeling hills were clearly visible from the plain area.

Gulma is a place, which is surrounded by forests, hills, tea garden and river. There is a popular picnic spot in Gulma, on the bank of Mahanadi river. Though it was monsoon, there was not much of water level in the river. Its  glittery silver sand was looking like a painting with the reflection of clouded ash colored sky. Even the water of Mahanadi river was looking like a flow of melted monsoon cloud.

The silver river bed was nicely complemented the green surroundings, where local cattle were roaming around. There are some small tea stalls at the near by areas of the river, also you can order some local foods from those stalls. From the river bed, you will be able to see small houses of local people and also able to see a dense forest near the river.

As the forest is very close to the human habitat, the local people have to struggle with the wild animals especially elephants almost every day. But still, they are managing their lives at this place, taking education from the educational institutes in Siliguri or other places of the country.

Gulma station is also an old station. Currently, it has increased its area. The station area also very beautiful and calm, where one can spend their quality time with family or friends.

After visiting the Gulma station and the Mahanadi river, we decided to see the Gulma tea garden. It was a journey with the greens, which has a blue backdrop created by the hills.

Inside the tea garden, there were different kinds of birds, butterflies and a different nature. Tea workers were doing their job in their own ways, some were going to home on a lunch break. We were surrounded by greens and some unique beauties of nature.

The entire journey reminded me of famous lines of the great poet Rabindranath Tagore, “God, the Great Giver, can open the whole universe to our gaze in the narrow space of a single land.”
