Chinese Colony in Kolkata // Jaggyasenee Chakraborty

Can you imagine, there are a bunch of Chinese families staying in Kolkata, celebrating their rituals, decorating the entire colony as a Chinese colony, selling Chinese authentic foods and so on? Yes, a few of us might have heard about this colony a bit, but there is a lot actually.

I heard about this area when I was a kid and since then I had a dream to visit this area. So, I decided to visit on the eve of Lunar New Year. At first, it was really difficult for me to locate the area properly, but yes, I did manage to locate later. It is located in Tangra, Kolkata.

When I reached, they were decorating the entire area with red origami and playing Chinese music. It was such a different feeling there. You can see all the houses are decorated with red origami, house constructions are also showcasing Chinese elements and walls are having Chinese paintings. They own few shops which are selling authentic Chinese foods which you will not get in any Indian market easily. There are many Chinese restaurants and I decided to visit one of them. And guess what? Beautiful cuisine, authentic Chinese flavour and taste. What I understood is, very few are visiting these restaurants as many of us do not even know about them.

I’ll definitely visit again and enjoy the taste of those cuisines. Also, would suggest you to pay a visit to this place if you want to get a glimpse of Chinese tradition being here in Kolkata.
